Dr. Brunzalov: Health contribution should be increased to 10%

Money for health in Bulgaria is insufficient. The population is aging and this is associated with greater care. At the same time, technologies are developing, there are new molecules, but they require greater costs

Money for health in Bulgaria is insufficient. The population is aging and this is associated with greater care. At the same time, technologies are developing, there are new molecules, but they require greater costs. This was stated by the chairman of the Bulgarian Medical Union, Dr. Nikolay Brunzalov, in the program “Face to Face” on BTV.

The fact is that the money that Bulgaria allocates for health care is insufficient. We are in last place in the EU in terms of the percentage of GDP that the state allocates for health care. We have the lowest health contribution - 8%. How much it will be, life will show. If we want there to be no co-payment in medical institutions, the amount of these funds has reached, this will be our percentage of health insurance. The price at which the service is purchased is not the real one, the head of the Bulgarian Medical Association specified.

The Bulgarian Medical Association has always spoken out in favor of adequate preventive control in our activities. Even now, with our colleagues, we are making specific proposals. If we come to the conclusion that these are the needs of the Bulgarian people, what the system spends on healthcare, the state is obliged to provide, emphasized Dr. Brunzalov.

One of the options for adequately providing the system is for the health contribution to be at least 10%. The second thing is preventive control - not to allow any basis for violations in the system. Doctors are required to be accessible, to provide quality and to be cheap, but the three things cannot be done. Doctors are ready to provide world-class healthcare services here in Bulgaria, he explained.

“We are one of the largest taxpayers. We doctors and our associates contribute 1.2 billion to the state budget in corporate taxes and social security contributions. We want to have modern healthcare, to apply the latest medical practices and medicines, but to do it for free”, Dr. Brunzalov also said.

He commented that the young doctors were protesting in front of the wrong ministry and advised them to move to the Ministry of Finance.
