There are no reforms in our healthcare system, theft in it continues and is in full force at a high level. The increase in funds will not be felt until real reforms occur. This is like pouring water into a bottomless jug. This was stated by the former Minister of Health and anesthesiologist from the Military Medical Academy, Dr. Miroslav Nenkov, on Nova TV.
Asked how the system could be reformed, Nenkov said: “We need a very serious political leader to stand behind the reforms. How do you tell a thief that instead of 2 million a day, he will earn 200 thousand? He won't survive this.“
A video clip was circulated on social media showing a 29-year-old doctor from the Military Medical Academy running over a dog in the capital's "Razsadnika" neighborhood. The footage caused public outrage. Asked how it was possible for a man who chose the profession of saving lives to show such cruelty, Dr. Nenkov replied: “The fact that this man chose the medical profession does not mean that he is necessarily capable of feeling. This is a deep mental defect.“
He emphasized that despite the shock of the video, the Military Medical Academy should not have reacted impulsively until it became clear who had published the clip and whether it had been manipulated.
“Punishments cannot be imposed before the investigation is complete“, Nenkov believes.
Regarding the introduction of psychological assessments for doctors before starting practice, Nenkov was categorical that such control should first be applied to the political class: “The people who determine the future of the nation are clearly unfit for this. If there is going to be prior control, start with them.“
According to him, medical universities should focus more on the ethical and humanitarian preparation of future doctors during their training.
The expert also commented on the record health budget. Dr. Nenkov again emphasized that the increase in funds will not be felt until real reforms are implemented. “This is like pouring water into a bottomless pit. Stealing continues with terrible force“, he emphasized.
