The sintered lakes in the “Uhlovitsa“ cave near the Rhodope village of Mogilitsa are full and overflowing after the heavy rainfall in recent days, reported Danail Hadzhiev, a mountain guide and ski instructor, quoted by BTA.
The overflowing underground lakes are a beautiful sight for tourists, which has been forgotten in the last nearly 15 years due to climate change.
After the prolonged rains in the Rhodope Mountains in recent days, the water level in the underground of “Uhlovitsa“ has risen significantly. This is not an unusual condition for this cave, said Hadzhiev. According to him, global warming and the series of years with unusual drought are also felt in the caves.
In previous years, the overflow of the sintered lakes in “Uhlovitsa“ was normal, every spring and autumn they were filled by snowmelt and heavy rainfall.
The sintered lakes are water basins of different areas and volumes, formed as a result of natural damming of flowing groundwater, added Danail Hadzhiev. According to him, the tourist route from the cave is now especially beautiful for observing the underground lakes and the sintered limestone waterfall above them. The temperature in the cave is 10 degrees even on icy days for the Rhodopes.
