One of the discovered illegal homes for the elderly in Varna continued to operate under a different name after a major fire in 2022. At that time, it was called “Saint George”. Four people died in the incident. Then the fire was caused by a resident of the home with mental disorders, which in itself indicates that healthy people were mixed with mentally ill people. Years ago, the place operated without a license, which was revoked due to two other incidents at its former base.
Apart from this, it turns out that there are also many violations in the documentation. This is why the home in question continues to be surrounded by police. “Social Assistance” employees are checking the conditions and what is happening in the premises inside. So far, there has been no comment from the home for the elderly. Over 130 people have lived there, and the procedure for their relocation is ongoing.
“We are moving them to the home for the elderly or to the home for people with disabilities. Yesterday we accepted 4 people who were referred by the Social Assistance Agency. The “Gergana” home has a capacity of 100 people. It can accommodate 7-8. There is currently a major renovation underway there. The people have been moved to a temporary base until the end of June 2026. Today they will be examined and tested,” explained on the air of “Hello, Bulgaria” the deputy mayor of Varna municipality Snezhana Apostolova.
She assured that so far they have not received any signals about the fake homes. According to her, these are not official ones and there must be strict control so that such places do not exist.
