European powers set 30-day deadline for sanctions reinstatement as Tehran dismisses US criticism as "nonsense

The German government said that “the ball is in Iran“s court“ after talks with Tehran in London, Paris and Berlin on the country's nuclear program, Agence France-Presse reported, quoted by BTA.

The phone call between the foreign ministers of Germany, Britain, France and their Iranian counterpart followed the decision by European powers last month to set a 30-day deadline for the reinstatement of sanctions against Iran if an agreement is not reached on its nuclear program.

A spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry said that the proposal by the major powers of the E3 group (France, Germany, Britain) “to discuss a temporary extension of the mechanism called A ‘snapback’, if Iran meets certain conditions, remains on the table“. But “at this stage, the measures taken by Iran are not sufficient“.

For its part, Tehran described as “nonsense“ the latest criticisms by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding the Islamic Republic's missile program, which it said posed “unacceptable risks“.

“His words are nonsense“, said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei. According to him, the US “should not comment on the defense capabilities of a country that has decided to preserve its independence at all costs“.
