Israeli Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Shikli has sharply criticized the newly elected mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, calling him a "Hamas supporter," Agence France-Presse reports, BTA reports.
Shikli, who made his statement on the social network X, said that "the city, which was once a symbol of freedom, has handed over its keys to a man who supports a terrorist organization." The minister called on New York's Jewish community to immigrate to Israel.
Mamdani, 34, will take office in January and will be the first Muslim elected mayor of New York.
Shikli compare his views with those of the “fanatical jihadists who killed three thousand people 25 years ago“ - a reference to the attacks of September 11, 2001.
The new mayor has expressed support for the Palestinian cause for years. He calls Israel an “apartheid regime“ and describes the Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip as “genocide”, positions that have provoked strong reactions in both the United States and Israel.
