Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps planned to assassinate Israel's ambassador to Mexico Einat Krantz Naiger late last year, but the attempt was foiled and there is currently no threat. This was reported by "Reuters", citing a US official.
The Mexican government said later in the day that "there is no information about an alleged attack on the Israeli ambassador to Mexico".
"The plot was foiled and does not pose an immediate threat, the official told "Reuters". This is just the latest in a long series of attacks by Iran around the world against diplomats, journalists, dissidents and anyone who disagrees with them. Something that should be deeply concerning to any country with an Iranian presence.” The official declined to say how the plot was foiled or provide further details about the operation. In a statement, Israel’s foreign ministry thanked Mexican security and law enforcement agencies for “thwarting an Iranian-led terrorist network that attempted to attack Israel’s ambassador to Mexico.” Iran’s mission to the United Nations in New York declined to comment. The United States and its allies have often accused Iran and its proxies of attempting violent attacks against Tehran’s opponents. Iranian officials have rejected the accusations, saying they are politically motivated.
Security services in Britain and Sweden warned last year that Tehran was using criminal proxies to carry out violent attacks in those countries, with London saying it had disrupted 20 Iran-linked plots since 2022.
The head of Britain's domestic intelligence service, MI5 Director General Ken McCallum, said last month that Iran was "desperately" trying to silence its critics around the world, citing how Australia had uncovered Iran's involvement in anti-Semitic plots and Dutch authorities had uncovered a failed assassination attempt.
Israel has long been a target of Iran, especially since the Israelis launched an air war with Iran in June, in which US bombers attacked Iranian nuclear facilities.
