Seventeen people have died and twelve are missing after a landslide in Central Java, Indonesia, caused by heavy rains, the Indonesian news agency Antara reported today, Reuters reported, quoted by dariknews.bg.
„Eleven bodies have been found, three yesterday and eight today. "Twelve people are still missing," said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Abdul Muhari.
On Thursday, a landslide buried a dozen houses in the town of Cilacap in the village of Cibeuning, Antara reported, citing agency deputy director Budi Iravan.
The site of the incident is difficult for rescuers to access as the victims were buried at depths of 3 to 8 meters, Iravan said.
The rainy season in the Southeast Asian country began in September and will continue until April, bringing a higher risk of flooding and extreme rainfall in many areas, according to the meteorological agency.
In January, a landslide triggered by heavy rains in another Central Java city, Pekalongan, killed at least 25 people.
