Hungary will sue the European Commission if it bypasses Budapest's veto on planned sanctions against the purchase of Russian gas and oil, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said, quoted by the Hungarian MTI agency, BTA reported.
In an interview with Hungarian public radio, Orban stressed that "Brussels is playing unfairly", as it presents the ban on Russian oil and gas imports as a measure in the field of trade policy, and not as a sanction instrument. He explained that in this way the EU ensures that the decision is made by qualified majority, rather than unanimously, bypassing the Hungarian veto, which, according to Orbán, the EU is acting "completely illegally".
The Hungarian Prime Minister described the actions of the European Commission as "a clear violation of the rule of law" and stressed that although the legal process will be long and will not immediately solve the problem, Hungary must send a clear signal that the EU "has abandoned the rule of law and is abusing its power".
