On Saturday, November 13, a Russian drone carried out a targeted strike on the Turkish ship VIVA in the Black Sea. There were 11 Turkish citizens on board. The crew was not injured in the attack.
This is stated in a statement by the press service of the Ukrainian Navy, quoted by UNIAN.
The ship was traveling along the "grain corridor" to Egypt with a cargo of sunflower oil.
According to the military department, the strike was carried out on the high seas within Ukraine's exclusive economic zone, but out of range of Ukrainian anti-aircraft weapons.
"Russia is grossly and cynically violating international maritime law. "Such actions directly contradict the fundamental principles of freedom of navigation," the statement said.
The ship continued its journey to Egypt.
The navy also released footage of the aftermath of the drone strike.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed hope to discuss a peace plan between Ukraine and Russia with US President Donald Trump.
He made the remarks after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Erdogan stressed that "peace is not far away".
The Turkish leader met with Putin in Turkmenistan yesterday and the two praised the "comprehensive peace efforts" to end the war, with Turkey reaffirming its readiness to support peace efforts.
He told Putin that a limited ceasefire in the war, focused on energy facilities and ports in particular, could be beneficial.
"The Black Sea should not be seen as a battlefield. Such a situation would only harm Russia and Ukraine," Erdogan stressed.
"Everyone needs safe shipping in the Black Sea. This must be guaranteed.".
Russia attacked two Ukrainian ports on Sunday, damaging three Turkish ships, including a vessel carrying food supplies, Ukrainian officials and a shipowner said - days after Moscow threatened to cut Ukraine off from the sea.
