Around 1,000 people may have disappeared at sea as a result of the storms caused by Cyclone Hari, which caused serious damage in southern Italy last month, the non-governmental organization for the rescue of migrants "Mediterranean Saving Humans" announced today, quoted by ANSA.

The estimate is based on information collected by refugees from Libya and Tunisia about vessels that disappeared during the bad weather conditions, the organization explained.

The president of "Mediterranean Saving Humans" Laura Marmorale described the incident as "one of the biggest tragedies in recent years on the Central Mediterranean route".

She accused the governments of Italy and Malta of not responding adequately, saying they were "silent" and that they had "taken no action" in response to what had happened.
