Russia has seized more territory in Ukraine in the past year than in the previous two, Agence France-Presse reported, citing its own analysis of data by the Institute for the Study of War, BTA reported.

As of February 24, 2025, the Russian army has established control, according to the Washington-based think tank, over 4,524 square kilometers (sq. km) of Ukrainian land. American analysts make the reservation that they cannot confirm Russia's claims for another 731 square kilometers.

From February 24, 2023 to the same date in 2024, the Russian army has seized 4,143 sq. km. There is no confirmation for 347 sq. km.

Over the previous one-year period, the situation has hardly changed.

At this point, Russia controls a little more than 19% of the territory of Ukraine. Most of this land was captured in the first weeks of the war.

Before its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Russia controlled, directly or through its supported separatists, about 7% of Ukraine - the Crimean peninsula and part of the industrial region of Donbas.
