Russia continues to suffer massive battlefield losses, which will continue to hamper its ability to achieve its broad campaign objectives in the spring and summer of 2026.

Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to exaggerate Russian battlefield achievements, even though Ukrainian forces have recently liberated a significant portion of territory in southern Ukraine.

On March 10, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine’s Main Military Intelligence Service (GUR) had received Russian documents estimating Russia’s battlefield losses.

These are the main conclusions of a daily analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

According to the information in the document, Russian forces are suffered 1.315 million combat deaths and serious combat injuries during the full-scale invasion.

ISW recently assessed that Ukrainian counterattacks in southern Ukraine highlight the limitations of Russia's ability to redeploy forces to reinforce unstable sectors.

Continued heavy battlefield losses, especially if Russia continues to struggle to recruit enough new volunteers to replace its losses, will hamper Russia's ability to respond to Ukrainian advances, let alone launch large-scale summer offensives to try to achieve the Kremlin's unrealistic goals.

Ukrainian forces are stepping up their medium-range strike campaign against Russian logistics, military equipment, and human resources, which would likely also hinder a Russian spring-summer offensive in 2026.

Ukrainian forces have advanced 10 to 12 kilometers in two separate operations in the Dnipropetrovsk region, which reportedly liberated more than 400 square kilometers since the end of January 2026.

The commander of the 1st Separate Assault Regiment of Ukraine, Captain Dmytro Filatov, whose regiment is operating in the direction of Khulyaypole, said on March 10 that the regiment had advanced 12 kilometers into Russian positions between Novye Zaporozhye and Dobropilya (both north of Khulyaypole and south of Aleksandrovka).

The commander of a Ukrainian airborne battalion said on March 10 that the battalion had advanced 10 to 11 kilometers in the direction of Aleksandrovka.

The spokesman for the Ukrainian Southern Defense Forces, Colonel Vladislav Voloshyn, said on March 10 that Ukrainian forces had regained the initiative in some areas near the border between the Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk.

Voloshin reported that Russian forces had not advanced towards Khuljaipole for the past three months (since mid-December 2025) and have now redirected their efforts towards Zaliznychne (west of Khuljaipole), Mirne and Charivne (both southwest of Khuljaipole), likely due to successful Ukrainian counterattacks north and northeast of Khuljaipole.

Ukrainian forces conducted mutually supporting operations towards Khuljaipole and Aleksandrovka in late 2025 and early 2026, respectively, to push Russian forces out of the Dnepropetrovsk region and undermine Russian preparations for a spring offensive.

Ukrainian forces were likely able to advance rapidly towards Aleksandrovka after penetrating scattered Russian positions in poor weather conditions and suppressing Russian defense systems based on drones.

SpaceX's blocking of Russia's Starlink satellite link in Ukraine in early February 2026 may also have allowed Ukrainian forces to advance into the Dnepropetrovsk region.

Ukrainian forces are stepping up their campaign of medium-range strikes against Russian logistics, military equipment, and human resources, which will likely also hinder Russia's spring-summer offensive in 2026.

Kremlin officials have given different versions of US President Donald Trump's statements about a ceasefire in Ukraine during his call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 9.

Putin continued to call on the US to end its military operation in the Middle East, while refusing to end Russia's war in Ukraine.

The Russian government is considering a bill that would give the Russian president the authority to conduct extraterritorial military operations to protect Russian citizens in abroad.

Ukrainian forces recently advanced near Aleksandrovka. Russian forces recently advanced in the Kostyantynivka-Druzhkovka tactical zone and near Pokrovsk.

Ukrainian forces struck a defense plant in Russia. Russian forces launched 137 drones against the cities of Dnipro and Kharkiv.
