The French army's chief of staff said on Monday that the US had become an unpredictable ally that was affecting "France's interests and security", Reuters reported, BTA reported.

"We were surprised by an American ally who remains an ally but who is becoming increasingly unpredictable and does not even bother to inform us when it decides to launch military operations," Fabien Mandon told a security and defense forum in Paris.

"This has an impact on our security and has an impact on our interests," he added.

France and the US are close allies in NATO, but frustration is growing in Paris over Washington's decision to launch its war against Iran in the Middle East, after US President Donald Trump has already angered European allies with his plans for Greenland.

Trump also "criticized his allies for their reluctance to actively engage in operations to secure shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world's oil supplies pass and which is the backbone of the economies of the Persian Gulf countries.

"We intervened in Afghanistan at the request of the Americans, who invoked Article 5 of NATO, and who chose to withdraw without informing us," said Mandon. "Now they have decided to intervene in the Middle East without informing us. However, the immediate concern of the French armed forces is to find solutions for France to protect citizens who pass through the region," he added.
