A 30-year-old Chicago police officer was shot and killed overnight on the city's southwest side while on his way home from work , the Associated Press reported, citing BTA, citing the police.

Police Chief Larry Snelling told reporters that the officer was on his way home and was still in uniform, but was wearing something over it to cover it up, as is customary for officers when they are off duty. The officer was shot multiple times early this morning and was pronounced dead at a Chicago hospital, Snelling said.

Police have not announced a motive for what happened.

The victim's car was stolen, but police have not confirmed if the shooting was part of a carjacking. No suspect is in custody.

"The officer was the victim of a crime that we work against to keep the people of this city safe," Snelling said. "Another sad day for the Chicago Police Department.

The officer had been on the force for six years and was killed just two days before his 31st birthday, the AP said.
