Suez Canal crews rescued Tanzanian-flagged cargo ship “ Labatros” from sinking in Port Said, reported in “Al Ahram”, quoted by BTA.
Rescuers responded to an emergency call from the captain who reported that the ship had listed to the right and was beginning to sink. There was a crew of 12 on board.
The vessel, 94 meters long and 15 meters wide, was in the northern holding area before joining a southbound convoy. “Labatros” had traveled from Lebanon to the Egyptian port of Adabia on the Gulf of Suez in the Red Sea.
The tugboats “Port Said”, “Mosaheb” and “Al Bahar” who saved the crew and helped the captain avoid sinking.
The ship is currently undergoing a technical inspection. The reasons for the accident are still unclear.
In recent months, the technical teams of the Suez Canal have been in a state of heightened alert due to cases of damage to vessels as a result of attacks by the Yemeni Houthi rebels.
Tensions in the Red Sea have diverted traffic from the international sea route and dropped revenues by over 50%. The Suez Canal is a key source of foreign exchange for Egypt.
