French President Emmanuel Macron today accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Atal, who will remain at the head of a caretaker government, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
The agency notes that this comes as France prepares to host the Olympic Games in Paris at the end of the month.
A statement from the president's office said Macron had "accepted" the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and other ministers. Atal and other members of the government should "deal with current affairs until a new government is appointed," the statement said.
There is no specific deadline for when Macron is due to appoint a new prime minister after parliamentary elections this month left the National Assembly (the lower house of parliament) without a dominant political bloc in power for the first time in France's post-World War II history.
