Ukrainian forces shelled Russia's Belgorod region today, injuring 11 people, including two children, who were more seriously injured, announced the governor of the region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

Gladkov wrote on the Telegram messaging app that the two boys underwent surgery after suffering serious injuries, including one with extensive wounds to both legs. Medics plan to send them to Moscow for further treatment.

Gladkov said residents provided first aid to the victims before emergency services arrived, shielding the wounded from falling shrapnel.

The attack damaged 22 apartments and eight private houses, as well as more than 20 cars, the governor added.

Reuters could not independently confirm this information.

Ukrainian officials did not comment, the agency notes.

Ukrainian forces have long subjected the city of Belgorod and nearby areas to shelling and other attacks, according to Reuters. The agency recalls that Ukrainian forces entered the neighboring Kursk region last month and senior officers claim that their troops have occupied dozens of villages.
