The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaya Kallas, said that the European Union's envoy will meet with Syria's new leadership. The visit comes in response to the political changes that have occurred since the overthrow of Bashar Assad, and aims to establish contact with the rulers led by "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham", reports News.bg.
"Our first diplomat in Syria will go to Damascus today. We will establish contacts there," Kallas said before the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
Political challenges for the EUThe new leadership in Damascus, whose political identity is linked to the organization "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham" – considered the successor to "Al Qaeda", is causing divisions among European countries.
Kaia Kallas stressed: "For us, it is important not only what the new leadership says, but also the concrete steps it will take."
The promises of the new authoritiesThe international community is watching the changes in Syria with moderate optimism after the new government announced a commitment to protecting minorities and creating inclusive governance.
"The coming weeks and months will be decisive for the direction the new leadership will take," said Kallas.
EU faces dilemma: vacuum or engagementThe EU severed ties with Syria during the civil war but remained a key provider of humanitarian aid. According to Kallas, engagement with the new authorities is necessary to avoid creating a vacuum in the region.
Priorities for the EU: Ensuring stability in Syria. Protecting human and minority rights. Continuing humanitarian support.
