The US Coast Guard said on Wednesday that it had responded to a fire that broke out aboard the 183-meter cargo ship Morning Midas, located about 300 nautical miles (almost 483 kilometers) southwest of the town of Adak in Alaska, News.bg reports.

There are 22 people on board the Liberian-flagged vessel. There are no reports of injuries so far, and the crew is actively fighting the fire, authorities said. The Morning Midas is a car carrier with a common cargo compartment, which significantly complicates extinguishing a fire in the vehicles.

According to data from the LSEG navigation system, the ship's final destination is the Mexican port of Lázaro Cárdenas.

Air crews and a Coast Guard ship have been dispatched to the scene, and three more vessels are already in the area to provide assistance.

The US Coast Guard and the ship's owner, Hawthorn Navigation Limited, have not yet made any additional statements.
