In the very heart of the Eastern Front, the Ukrainian military is forced to face the most modern threat of the 21st century - drones. Soldiers in Konstantinovka, Donetsk region, are defending themselves from the enemy "birds" using a low-tech method, namely fishing nets, writes CNN.
Simple nets stretched along the roads to besieged cities have become the last defense for the military. They prevent attacks by suicide drones, whose explosives get tangled in the dense fibers of the nets.
This unconventional defense is being used most acutely near Konstantinovka, one of three cities threatened with encirclement as a result of Russia's summer offensive. One of the officers from the 93rd Mechanized Brigade, whose call sign is Vasil, told CNN:
"We haven't received reinforcements for eight months. The older soldiers are exhausted, but no one is replacing them. We have a critical shortage of personnel.“
Without people, technology is leading. Vasil uses vampire drones to deliver ammunition, water, food and chargers. A quadcopter carries up to 10 kg over a distance of 12-15 km.
"Mortar gunners often have to carry up to 30 kg of ammunition on foot, because the equipment does not pass. The front line is too vulnerable to enemy drones“, says the commander.
The Russians are also modernizing. Vasil notes the emergence of a professional unit called "Rubicon", whose main task is to destroy Ukrainian drones by attaching a thread from their own drone, which gets tangled in the blades of the Ukrainian UAV.
"War now is either you are a drone hunter or you are a victim. We are constantly at risk of air strikes,” Vasil adds, pointing to the surveillance monitors in the basement of the command post.
The situation is aggravated not only by technical challenges, but also by the information gap. The commander speaks of a systemic communication problem:
“We don’t tell our state much. And the state is for the people. To understand, you have to be here. We are tired. And I think other states are tired of helping us.”
The situation on the front
As UNIAN reported, for months Ukrainian troops have been holding back the Russian offensive towards the strategically important Pokrovsk, destroying thousands of Russian soldiers with the help of kamikaze drones. But in recent weeks, the situation has changed: Russian forces have broken through the defenses and entered the city for the first time.
A day earlier, analysts from the Institute for the Study of War reported on the Russian offensive near several settlements in the Donetsk region. It is noted that the enemy is advancing in Zeleny Gay, near Poddubny, Andreivka-Klevtsovoye and Popovo Yar.
In addition, ISW analysts note that Russia has again begun to use a larger number of armored vehicles at the front. According to experts, Moscow may be testing new tactics, checking the vulnerability of the Ukrainian defense system.
