Turkish Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu has been fined for speeding after sharing video footage of himself driving at 224 km/h on a highway on social media, Turkish news site T24 reported, quoted by BTA.
Uraloğlu shared the video on social media of himself driving at a speed significantly higher than the permitted speed in order to advertise the highway between the capital Ankara and the city of Nigde.
In footage shot inside the car, it is noticeable that Minister Uraloğlu was driving at up to 224 km/h, although the maximum speed on highways in Turkey is 140 km/h.
His post caused violent reactions from users on social media.
"Why don't you follow the speed limit, Mr. Minister?", asks one user, while another notes: "This is a country where the minister doesn't follow the speed limit and people get fined without a problem".
Following the wave of reactions, the minister announced that he was caught by a radar on the road and received a fine for speeding.
"I got behind the wheel to see the condition of the Ankara highway – Nowhere. Without realizing it, for a moment, I exceeded the speed limit," the minister wrote, adding that "observing speed limits is mandatory for everyone."
"The necessary legal measures have been taken by the traffic police. I inform the public that in the future I will be much more careful", Uraloğlu also said.
