Official statistics show that sales of electric cars in Germany fell by an average of 16.4 percent in the first six months of 2024. The decline was particularly large for Tesla-branded electric vehicles, with Tesla sales from January to June in Germany down 41.6 percent compared to the same period last year. Comparing data for June alone, sales were down 42.2 percent.
It is difficult to positively assess such indicators, especially considering that the German car market as a whole saw growth in the first half of 2024. Total passenger car sales rose 5.4% to 1.47 million units in the first half of the year and improved in June by 25.8% to 297,329 units.
BMW, Volkswagen and Porsche are growth leaders, but not every German brand has reason to rejoice. Audi sales fell by 17.1% and Mercedes' results worsened by 12.7%. For its part, Seat proved it is still too early to be written off, increasing sales for the first half of the year by 37.9 percent to 83,426 units. Volvo sales rose 59.6 percent to 31,763 units, likely largely due to the addition of the EX30 electric crossover to the lineup.
By comparison, China's BYD has sold 1,202 cars in Germany in the six months since the start of the year, Ferrari is just 80 cars behind, but this figure represents a jump for the Italians of 427 percent compared to the results of the same period last year year.
