Sarah Wagenknecht, leader of Sarah Wagenknecht's Union for Reason and Justice (BSW), does not rule out that gas prices in Germany will continue to rise due to the ban on supplies from Russia.
„Gas prices have risen by 77% since 2021“, she writes in X. „And if prices continue to rise due to the comprehensive embargo against Russia, what can be done?“ "For the ministerial team, thanks to the recent €500 salary increase, this will hardly matter," Wagenknecht said, commenting on German Economy Minister Katharina Reiche's claim that a ban on Russian gas purchases would not lead to higher prices for consumers.
On Monday, the EU Council approved a phased ban on all purchases of Russian gas from January 1, 2028. The decision applies to both pipeline and liquefied natural gas. New gas contracts will be banned from January 1, 2026; short-term contracts must be completed by June 17, 2026; and long-term contracts can continue until January 1, 2028. The European Parliament is pushing for an even stricter ban, demanding a halt to all Russian gas supplies to EU countries from January 1, 2027.
