Europe uses up 95% of its gas storage reserves - 1

Net gas withdrawals (the net difference between withdrawals and injections) from underground gas storage (UGS) in Europe since the start of the heating season have reached 52 billion cubic meters, accounting for around 95% of the volume injected in the summer, according to calculations based on data from Gas Infrastructure Europe.

Underground gas withdrawals as of 10 February amounted to around 623 million cubic meters. This total withdrawal figure since the start of the month is only the fifth highest for February. The total volume of fuel in underground gas storage is now around 39.9 billion cubic meters.

Temperatures in Europe this week have been significantly warmer than in the previous seven-day period. Temperatures above freezing are forecast for most of the week in the region.

The share of wind power in EU electricity generation averaged 19% in January and 21% in February. The average purchase price of gas in Europe in February was 409 USD per 1000 cubic meters, compared to 415 USD in January.

The last gas extraction season from European underground storage facilities ended on 28 March 2025, with 33.57% of reserves remaining. Currently, European underground gas storage facilities are 36.13% full (16.65 percentage points lower than the average for this date over the past 5 years), compared to 48.5% a year earlier. Since the start of the heating season on 13 October, EU countries have withdrawn approximately 57 billion cubic meters of gas from storage facilities. Net yields reached almost 52 billion cubic meters, or 95% of the volume injected in the summer. In addition, the total gas yield from underground gas storage facilities on the 120th day after reaching their maximum capacity was 3.5% higher than the average for that day in the previous 5 years.

A lower storage capacity by mid-February was observed only in 2022 (34.5%). The heating season then ended in March, when approximately 25-26% of reserves remained in underground gas storage facilities. The absolute minimum level of gas in European storage facilities was recorded in March 2018 - 17.7%.
