Cyprus will register in the European Union local rose water as a product with a "protected geographical indication", announced the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Maria Panayiotou, BNR reported.
Today and tomorrow in the Cypriot "pink valley" the 16th edition of the Rose Festival takes place.
The dossier of "Rose water from Agros" – the village in the Troodos mountains, which is the center of Cypriot rose production, is currently being evaluated and its successful European registration is expected, announced the Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panayiotou.
This is the second product from the region to fight for such recognition. "Sweet of Roses from Agros" was registered as a "protected geographical indication" in 2016
Rose oil, liqueur and confectionery made from the processing of roses are traditional to the area.
One of the government's goals is to support local producers and encourage investment in quality and unique Cypriot agricultural products, stressed Minister Panayiotou.
She specified that within the framework of the Strategic Plan of the Common Agricultural Policy 2023-2027, financial assistance is provided for the cultivation of roses, the production of products from them, the creation and modernization of processing enterprises.
These activities will contribute to the revitalization of the mountainous regions in the country and the improvement of the quality of life in them, the minister said. Today and tomorrow the 16th Rose Festival is taking place in the village of Agros.
It offers visitors participation in picking roses, watching the distillation process, lots of music and dance entertainment.
