Polish thermal power plants will generate electricity for Ukraine by burning existing surplus coal. Warsaw will not pay for carbon dioxide emissions above the quota.
„We are working to be able to burn Polish coal, of which we have a lot, and not pay for burning it, that is, for carbon dioxide emissions, but for the electricity produced by Polish power plants from Polish coal, a transfer to European money through the existing energy bridge to Ukraine”, Prime Minister of the Republic Donald Tusk told reporters after talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Warsaw. In addition, Warsaw will increase the supply of electric generators to Kyiv.
On June 11, Kyiv reported that around 80% of the country's thermal energy production and a third of its hydropower production have been destroyed since March. Ukraine has lost 9 GW of capacity.
At the beginning of May, due to the shortage, they began imposing restrictions on industrial facilities and urged citizens not to turn on energy-intensive appliances during peak hours. However, these measures were not enough: soon regular blackout schedules for domestic users began to be drawn up across the country. Since the beginning of June, Ukraine was forced to significantly increase the supply of electricity from abroad.
