Germany's domestic public debt hits record €2.45 trillion  - 1

Germany's domestic public debt has reached a record high by the end of 2023, amounting to around EUR 2.45 trillion, Germany's Federal Statistical Office said .

„The state budget at the end of 2023 has a debt to the non-state sector in the amount of EUR 2445.1 billion”, the department notes. Compared to the end of 2022, public debt increased by 3.3% (EUR 77.1 billion) at the end of 2023, a historical high. The growth is due to the increase in the debt of the federal government, municipalities and the social security system, although the federal states managed to reduce it.

In 2023, the debt per capita in the country reached EUR 28,943. This figure is EUR 778 more than in 2022. At the end of 2023, the federal government debt amounted to EUR 1,696.3 billion, an increase of EUR 75.9 billion (4.7%) compared to the previous year.

Compared to the previous year, the debt of the federal states decreased by EUR 12.7 billion (2.1%), to EUR 594.2 billion. At the same time, the debt of municipalities and municipalities increased by EUR 13.8 billion (9.8%), to EUR 154.6 billion.
