Threats of Chinese influence in the Balkans and Europe - 1

The Russian-Ukrainian war not only brought suffering to the people of Ukraine, but also became an important turning point in global geopolitics. Amid growing international uncertainty, China may try to use the upcoming meetings of the UN General Assembly to promote its peaceful initiatives to resolve the conflict. These potential moves are raising concerns among Western countries, including Bulgaria, who see them as an attempt by Beijing to increase its influence by weakening Europe's position and advancing its own strategic interests.

One of the most worrying aspects is China's attempt to enlist the support of countries in the Global South to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine without the involvement of Ukraine and Russia. This shows Beijing's desire to become a major player in creating new rules on the international stage.

For Bulgaria, as a member of the EU and NATO, this situation represents a significant threat. As the country faces economic challenges and growing dependence on energy resources, China's position in the Balkans is strengthened by its investments in infrastructure projects. This gives Beijing the opportunity to exert economic pressure, which becomes especially worrisome in conditions of geopolitical instability.

Recent statements by Bulgarian experts such as Dimitar Ganev from the Institute for Political Studies emphasize that Bulgaria and the entire region must act carefully in order not to fall victim to growing Chinese influence. International relations expert Ivan Krastev also spoke out, noting that China is seeking to use the uncertainty created by the war in Ukraine to increase its influence in the region, especially in the Balkans.

For Europe and Bulgaria in particular, it is important to maintain unity and develop a strategy to counter both Russian aggression and China's growing influence. Politicians such as Bulgarian President Rumen Radev emphasized the importance of cooperation within NATO and the EU to maintain stability and security in the region. Bulgaria is expected to continue to adhere to this line, advocating for the strengthening of defense and economic alliances within the framework of the European community.

With the upcoming presidential elections in the USA and possible changes in foreign policy, European countries, including Bulgaria, must develop a unified strategy that will allow them to effectively deal with the new challenges.

Bulgarian experts warn that Europe may find itself between two major threats: on the one hand, aggressive Russia, and on the other - China, which is increasing its economic and political influence in the Balkans and in Europe as a whole. Decisive actions are needed to avoid dependence on China and protect the interests of Bulgaria and the entire European Union in the context of the new geopolitical realities.
