Saudi Arabia intends to work to restore the Syrian economy, which suffered during the civil war and as a result of sanctions restrictions.
“Saudi Arabia, as well as our partners in the region and around the world, must understand what needs to be offered in the form of immediate aid and longer-term programs to help the Syrian economy get back on its feet,“ the kingdom's Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud said at a press conference in Damascus.
He received from the head of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed al-Shara, “a very clear idea of what is needed” to restore the country's economy. “I am confident that Syria has the potential to get back on its feet. The resources in Syria are vast, so we just need to work with the Syrian people and leadership to unlock this potential. “Saudi Arabia will be at the forefront of this work”, the head of the Saudi foreign ministry stressed.
On Friday, the Saudi foreign minister visited Damascus, where he held talks with the head of the new Syrian administration. Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud's previous visit to Syria took place in April 2023. A month later, Saudi Arabia invited former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to Riyadh to attend a summit of the Arab League, which suspended the republic's membership in the regional organization in 2011.
