The streets of Sofia are not a racetrack, we must be responsible behind the wheel. This was told to journalists by the mayor of the capital, Vasil Terziev, who opened an event of the road safety campaign: “There is no restart on the road“, BTA reports.

“People's personal responsibility is very important. Everyone who gets in the car should know that they are getting into something that weighs one or two tons and can cause great damage or take lives. For this reason, it is extremely important to be responsible when you get behind the wheel, to drive at a reasonable speed, not to use drugs and alcohol. If a person does not value their own life and the lives of others, it is very difficult to protect themselves. It is important for everyone to have self-awareness, and not to think about having a camera every five meters or a police officer lying down“, pointed out Mayor Terziev.

When asked by journalists whether additional guardrails will be installed on “Botevgradsko Shose“ Blvd., where a car split in two after a high-speed accident and its driver died, the mayor replied: “This is frivolous – 220 km/h in urban conditions. No amount of restraints can prevent a fatal outcome when someone chooses to get in the car and drive at such an inappropriate speed“.

Mayor Terziev also pointed out that there are special tracks and places where one can drive at high speed and get an adrenaline rush, but city streets are not the place for that.

More young people should choose to be responsible on the road, the mayor called. He assured that the local authorities will continue their efforts to have more and more speed cameras and to make the roads safer.
