It would not be far-sighted for the BNB to get involved in the political process. This is what he told "Nova TV" the governor of the central bank, Dimitar Radev, after his meeting with the president on the occasion of the possibility of taking the post of acting prime minister.
According to him, in order to solve a short-term problem, a long-term one will be created. "After 2015, we managed to achieve a healthy distance between the BNB and the political forces," Dimitar Radev noted.
He is one of the potential caretaker prime ministers under the recent changes to the Constitution.
"We had a productive conversation, the decision will be up to the president. I presented him with my position, which is that it is not a good idea to involve the bank in the political process. The first is purely substantive - this will cast a political shadow over the institution and for a long time," noted the governor, quoted by BNT.
Dimitar Radev pointed out that there is a code of ethics and rules of the European Central Bank that prohibit governors and deputy governors of national banks from holding political positions.
"There is a conflict with both national legislation and European legislation. The governor of the central bank and his role are explicitly defined in the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU and the Statute of the ECB. They are very explicit in this regard - that these positions cannot be reconciled", concluded Dimitar Radev.
