Prof. Krasen Stanchev: Political chaos increases costs by up to BGN 600 million. - 1

Usually before an election there is always an expected increase in all possible incomes, including subsidies to those who would vote or support those who would participate in the election. This was said by Prof. Krasen Stanchev, founder of the Institute for Market Economy, former member of parliament, now a lecturer at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski”.

"On average, in such situations of something like political uncertainty, which is not quite right to call a political crisis, the costs increase between 200 and 300 million per year. In recent years, however, this increase, not counting payments under various contracts for orders from the budget, this increase is now perhaps double, i.e. somewhere between 400 and 600 million BGN, which more or less coincides with what you say – 300 million. But that's normal, and it's normal because you end up having a series of elections first, with all the parties participating in the elections promising everything to whoever asked for something.

But those who would most likely vote are those who depend entirely on the budget. They are not many people, but they are somewhere around 20% of the population, of the voters, not of the population, of the senior citizens. Of course, not everyone gets it, only those who are directly appointed by the government in particular," he explained to the "This is Bulgaria" audiocast. of "Focus".

"Such pre-election wage increases do not increase with success. For example, there is a tradition, while there were subsidies for tobacco producers, there is a tradition in pre-election years, in an election campaign, to increase these subsidies, and they are increased from 3 to 6 times, with the hope that the respective voters and, accordingly, the party they vote for tobacco producers, for example DPS, would be a good participant in any coalition agreements after the elections. This thing disappeared after the subsidies disappeared, they are somewhat illegitimate, illegal even within the European Union," said Prof. Stanchev.
