Nadezhda Neinsky: Pandemic corruption and Russian influence are our main obstacles to Schengen - 1

The field in Bulgaria is getting dirty to such an extent that it is difficult even for unprejudiced spectators to follow what is happening”.

This is what the diplomat and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Nadezhda Neinski told bTV.

„It makes an impression that when you listen, some things are kept silent. Did no one know about all this? Have the channels, patronage and umbrellas now appeared? What worries me is the compromised idea of Bulgaria's western orientation. The idea that Bulgaria is successfully following one path is being compromised, she added.

„We saw that a nationalist was elected president in Slovakia. He said a familiar line – “I am for peace against war”. The new mantra is – “We are for peace”. "We are all for peace, but there is one country that invades another independent country and occupies 20% of its territory," commented Neinski.

„We cannot expect land-based Schengen and Eurozone membership. How will the EU or NATO or any country entrust internal information to a country that cannot control what leaks into the public domain? It is not having connections in Austria that will bring Bulgaria into the overland Schengen, but the reputation of politicians, institutions and the ability to function as a European democratic state. "Schengen and the Eurozone are political decisions," emphasized the former Minister of Foreign Affairs.

„Hypothetically any foreign minister, if the institutions do not function, if we do not deal with pandemic corruption, if we do not carry out the reforms, if we do not deal with Russian influence and show that the state has mechanisms to protect his national interests, and God forbid, he cannot make Bulgaria a Schengen member”, Nadezhda Neinski is categorical.
