The Dutch-flagged general cargo ship ADAMAS enters Varna Port Terminal for processing – West with the first load of fresh nuclear fuel for the Kozloduy NPP, produced by the American Westinghouse. This was reported by maritime.bg.
The fuel will be transported from the port terminal to the nuclear power plant by rail. RWFA cartridges are containerized.
This is the first delivery under a ten-year contract announced in 2022 between the “Kozloduy“ and “Westinghouse Electric Sweden”. The contract was signed in the presence of the then Minister of Energy Rosen Hristov and the ambassador of the USA in Sofia, Hero Mustafa, and of Sweden, Katarina Rangnit.
Then it was announced that fresh nuclear fuel would be supplied at the price of used Russian cartridges, allowing the nuclear plant to largely maintain its cost of production, and “Westinghouse” will install its in-reactor control system for free to run in parallel with Russia's. This should ensure the safe transition from one to the other fuel.
