Dimitar Radev: It is realistic to adopt the euro next year - 1

According to the governor of the BNB Dimitar Radev, the adoption of the euro next year remains a realistic scenario. In an interview with BTA, quoted by BNR, he confirmed that it is possible to meet the inflation criterion by the end of this year.

To a direct question whether it is realistic to introduce the single European currency next year, the governor answers:

“Yes, under one condition: a pro-European government with sufficiently broad support and a horizon of action”.

Our country is the only one among the other five – Romania, Poland. Czech Republic. Hungary and Sweden, which does not meet only one of the criteria, while the discrepancy in the others is at least on two other indicators.

According to Radev, the main prerequisites for us to be able to adopt the euro in 2025 are two: "a reduction in fiscal expansion and limiting the budget deficit this year by 1 percent", as well as "a pro-European government with a sufficiently broad support and action horizon".

In front of the BTA, the governor of the BNB also stated that, compared to the other evaluated countries, Bulgaria is in the most advanced stage of preparation for membership in the eurozone.

Earlier, the Acting Minister of Finance Lyudmila Petkova stated that it is technically possible for Bulgaria to introduce the euro from the beginning of 2026.
