Evelyn Banev-Brendo appeared before The Sofia City Court, where they decided to keep him in custody. First, his lawyer Silvia Naydenova spoke to NOVA. She described as absurd the words of Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov that he landed with a plane at an abandoned airport. Naydenova, however, did not answer the question of how exactly, according to her, he crossed the Bulgarian border.
Against this background, the court decided to accept the prosecution's concerns that Banev could be released early and go into hiding before serving his sentences abroad or be extradited to other countries
A little before 12 o'clock, Evelyn Banev-Brendo stood before the court. To hear that while he is in prison there will also be a measure of “detention in custody”. His lawyer commented on the decision to NOVA.
„The prosecutor's office, in order to prevent him from disappearing again in the future, requested this detention. The court, although it initially determined that it represented legal nonsense, later changed its decision and accepted that it could implement a remand measure "detention in custody”, Naydenova pointed out.
Before going to the National Assembly, in an interview with NOVA, the interior minister did not give a definitive answer as to how Evelin Banev-Brendo arrived in Bulgaria. “We have guidelines for what and how it happened,” said Stoyanov.
But the hypothesis that he landed at the airport near the village of Bukhovtsi, near Targovishte, in June 2022, was rejected by Banev's lawyer. “This is absurd. I cannot comment on such a thing, but it is not true, in my opinion. I have no idea when he crossed the border, ask him. I have no idea at all whether he was crossing the border, she said.
On Friday, trucks were moving along the airport runway where the small plane was abandoned in 2022, and the locals still did not understand what exactly happened then. “At the moment, Banev has not had an official interrogation, but there have been talks,”, the energy minister pointed out.
The claims that Banev is patronized by foreign services sound rather incredible for the interior minister. “It is absurd if it is heard that someone is an agent of any service, there is no point in commenting because this person is enlightened”, Stoyanov said categorically.
The question of why Evelin Banev-Brendo decided to surrender right now remains unanswered again.
