After more than a year's break, the prosecutor's collegium of the Supreme Judicial Council will request tomorrow the procedure for the selection of chief prosecutor to be resumed, NOVA reported.

How did it get here?
On June 22, 2023, the Supreme Judicial Council opened a procedure for the election of the chief prosecutor after the removal of Ivan Geshev. On July 6, 2023, it was suspended due to a case in the Supreme Court, initiated at Geshev's request. He attacked changes to the judicial laws, by which the chief prosecutor is elected and dismissed by 13 votes instead of the previous 17 in the 25-member Supreme Judicial Council. On July 26 of this year, the Constitutional Court announced that there was no problem with the reduced majority. Given this decision, the procurator's collegium will propose to the plenum of the Supreme Judicial Council, which elects the three big ones in the judiciary, to unfreeze the procedure for selecting the number one accuser. By law, at least three members of the SJC prosecutor's collegium, as well as the minister of justice, can nominate candidates for chief prosecutor. According to information from the sidelines of the Supreme Judicial Council, the hearing of the candidates and the election will take place on January 16 next year. It is not excluded that the current acting chief prosecutor Borislav Sarafov will fight for the titular position.
