Parvan Simeonov: Bulgarians don't love Russia, but the EU and the West - 1

The majority of Bulgarians declare a steady confidence in democratic models and the world and in the European Union. This is shown by the latest survey by the Gallup International Balkans agency. The research was conducted between August 28 and September 5, 2024, among 802 people using the face-to-face method. with tablets.

„The data clearly shows the ordering of different types of geopolitical factors. They clearly show trends of sustainable trust in the European Union, it is more hesitant in NATO, but it seems that there has been some recovery recently,“, told "Nova TV" the political scientist from “Gallup International Balkan“ Parvan Simeonov.

„What is new in our study is that we faced the adult population with a direct choice – democratic model or one related to the “global south or east”, the structure we got is 50:30:20. According to various criteria and indicators, nearly half of the population in Bulgaria, faced with this choice, clearly declares an affinity for Western models. There are 30% who are hesitant and 20% who are looking in the direction of the East”, the political scientist emphasized.

According to Parvan Simeonov, Eastern sentiments are more typical for the older generations, who are more nostalgic.

„It is often said that the Bulgarian is a Russophile against the background of other European countries, but rather he is a Germanophile. You know there are a number of historical examples as well. Germany is accepted as a model in principle in Bulgaria and it is the only country with a positive rating, he noted.

Simeonov emphasized that in the choice between the USA and Russia, the Bulgarian prefers Moscow. “In the United States, the data are stable, while in Russia they fell due to the shock of many from the beginning of the war,” said the political scientist.
