Belovo Protests: The Park Does Not Belong to the Mafia - 1

Citizens Protest Against the Sale of a Public Park in Belovo. The Park is Being Forced to Be Sold Due to an Unpaid Debt of Millions of Levs Accumulated by the Former Mayor of Belovo to Private Companies for Various Services. However, the Current Mayor Does Not Want to Pay. He claims that the services were not provided, and the municipality has become a victim of embezzlement, reports bTV.

“The park belongs to the people of Belovo, not the mafia“, reads one of the posters of the protesters in defense of the green area.

This is another property of the Belovo municipality, described by a private bailiff, due to debts to companies, recognized with the signature of the former mayor Kostadin Varev.

10 years ago, Varev defined the park as private municipal property that can be sold.

The current municipal council changed it to public, but too late. In a few days it will be auctioned, and the money from the sale will go to a Plovdiv company that bought the debts.

“The park should belong to the people. I remember at one time, there were deer, there was all sorts of things there“, says one of the protesters.

Months before he finished his term, the old mayor of the city committed to paying 1 million and 600 thousand leva to a group of companies, we read in this agreement.

The money is for the construction of a water supply system in the nearby village of Gabrovitsa. And there is no water supply system, explains the current mayor.

“Such water supply and sewage systems have not been implemented. With the clear awareness that there is no water supply system, Kostadin Varev admitted 1 million 680 thousand. He did not know how the process would end, but he knew that there was no water supply system built. And yet, he notarized such an obligation“, said Stoyko Stefanov.

Now, instead of a new water supply, local residents are supplied with water from a hose.

“The water supply, there is nothing worse than this. If I haven't turned on the water above, I've turned on two taps - everything immediately freezes and last year they replaced it”, says Tsvetan Stanchev from the village of Gabrovitsa.

Now the old mayor is the chairman of the municipal council in Belovo.
