Since the beginning of the year, 118 people have died as a result of road accidents. This is 5% more than in the same period in 2024. On January 16, 2025, the government of Rosen Zhelyazkov was formed. On the same day, it was stated that the "war on the roads" would be a main priority. After the Siyana accident on 31.03.2025, it became clear that there is still no action plan for the main priority. On 08.04.2025 An extraordinary meeting was called in the Council of Ministers, at which the Prime Minister assured us that a plan would be presented within a few days, through which we would oppose bad roads and undisciplined drivers.
A month later, there is no plan, but the State Agency “Road Traffic Safety“ launches a National Children's Drawing Competition (https://www.sars.gov.bg/%D0%B4%D0%B0%D0%B1%D0%B4%D0%BF-%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B0%D1%80%D1%82%D0%B8%D1%80%D0%B0-% . It would sound comical if it weren't so sad.
The Prime Minister's main tool for combating road traffic injuries deals with everything else, but not with managing the risk of road accidents, even though this is what is charged to him by law. The inability of the government to take extraordinary measures to normalize road traffic is becoming a threat to national security. For 111 days, the government of Rosen Zhelyazkov has continued to work on "autopilot" or "artificial intelligence" to influence road accidents. The lack of adequacy gives rise to perverse proposals from various political parties and television experts for legislative changes. A comparative analysis of the data on deaths shows that by March 31, 84 people died, which is one less than in 2024. Immediately after the Siyana accident, there were several days without any deaths from road accidents. After the empty promises, the number of victims is starting to increase again.
All this shows us that the transport system is unstable and is influenced by external and internal factors, regardless of the actions and inactions of the responsible institutions. Immediate structural and personnel changes are needed in the traffic safety management system, otherwise road traffic injuries will continue to increase.
