Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev presented Bulgaria at the regular meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union, which was held in Brussels, the press service of the foreign ministry announced.
There were two main topics on the agenda: the Russian military aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East and Syria.
The work of the Council began with a meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga. During the discussion, the Bulgarian first diplomat emphasized our country's consistent support for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Minister Georgiev expressed the need for increased diplomatic and economic pressure in response to Russian aggression.
In connection with the crisis in the Middle East, the Bulgarian Foreign Minister emphasized the need to return to a ceasefire and release the hostages, as well as concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.
He expressed support for the diplomatic efforts of the US and Qatar, as well as other regional partners.
On the topic of Syria, Minister Georgiev expressed support for the conduct of an inclusive political process that guarantees the rights of all citizens and communities in the country and respects the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Syria.
The Council adopted the 17th package of sanctions against Russia and took a political decision to lift economic sanctions against Syria.
