A protest against the introduction of the euro is blocking the center of Sofia. It is organized by the party “Vazrazhdane”. The demonstration is taking place in front of the BNB building, Nova TV reported.
Those dissatisfied with our upcoming entry into the eurozone blocked the boulevard in front of the Bulgarian National Bank building.
The protesters also tried to storm the Parliament building, but were stopped by the security forces. People chant "Mafia", "Resignation" and carry posters that read: "We keep the Bulgarian lev! Resignation, trial and prison for GERB, BSP, DBS, PP, DB, etc.!" There is a heavy police presence in the area.
There was also a protest on May 31.
The European Commission and the European Central Bank will release the convergence reports on the adoption of the euro in Bulgaria today. They are expected to be positive, meaning that the country will be able to adopt the single currency on January 1 next year and become the 21st member of the eurozone.
