Minister of Finance Temenuzhka Petkova will participate in the regular meeting of the Council of the European Union for Economic and Financial Affairs (ECOFIN) on July 8, 2025 in Brussels, FOCUS reported.

The meeting is key because it is the final step in Bulgaria's accession process on its path to the eurozone.

On July 8, the Council is expected to adopt three legal acts, which will complete the procedure at the EU level - a Council Decision on the adoption of the euro by Bulgaria, a Council Regulation amending Regulation (EC) 974/98 on the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria, as well as a Council Regulation amending Regulation (EC) 2866/98 on the exchange rate to the euro for Bulgaria. In practice, the adoption of the three legal acts will finally formalize Bulgaria's accession to the eurozone as of 01.01.2026.

Earlier that day, the European Parliament (EP) is expected to approve an opinion on the draft Council Decision on the adoption of the euro by Bulgaria. It has already received the preliminary approval of the EP Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Subcommittee on Taxation.

Before the ECOFIN Council meeting, at around 9:30 a.m. Bulgarian time, Minister Temenuzhka Petkova will make a short statement (doorstep).

The ceremony welcoming Bulgaria as the 21st member of the euro area is expected to start at 5 p.m. Bulgarian time.

The statement and the ceremony will be available to follow both on the official channel of the European Commission and on the Facebook page Za euroto BG - https://www.facebook.com/zaevrotobg/.
