The Ministry of Interior warns us to be especially careful with our belongings and to look out for pickpockets, NOVA reported.
This summer, attempted thefts in Varna have become more frequent and despite increased control and warnings from the police, many people still continue to leave their belongings unattended, which makes them an ideal target. The most frequently stolen items are mobile phones, wallets and jewelry, but cases in which more valuable items are also the subject of thefts are no exception.
Just a few days ago, when getting into her car, Sofia Georgieva was unpleasantly surprised.
„I found my car ransacked, it wasn't broken into, but it was ransacked all over. I realized that my belongings were missing. At first, I was shocked. The most important thing that was taken from me was my work laptop, which contained quite a bit of confidential information,” she said.
Thieves also attacked Stefan Paraskov’s car.
„My distronics was stolen. Without this part, the car was difficult to drive. I reported it to the Second Police Department - they immediately took fingerprints and a team came to the scene”, he said.
„Unlike the winter season, when the number is lower, in the summer there is always a tendency towards an increase in the registration of thefts - especially from beaches, from motor vehicles - items left unattended in cars”, pointed out Chief Inspector Zhivko Kostadinov - Head of the "Crimes against Property" sector at the Department of Internal Affairs – Varna.
Statistics show that the most common targets of theft are people who leave their belongings unattended, and thieves usually choose public places where they appear almost inconspicuous.
“The perpetrators blend in with the environment, and cannot be distinguished in any way - both from beachgoers and in large retail chains they mix with shoppers. They are well dressed, they do not arouse any suspicion. There are organized criminal groups that deal only with this - to observe beachgoers, tourists, cars and what they leave in them”, explained the chief inspector.
That is why the Ministry of Interior advises:
“When visiting public places, malls, large retail chains - always keep the bags, backpacks you are carrying in a visible place in front of your eyes, where you will not become a victim of pickpocketing. When visiting beaches and restaurants near the beach, do not leave large sums of money in cars or valuables in visible places that are a magnet for criminals. And those who are on the beach should not leave their belongings unattended.
