Andrey Kovachev: The vote of no confidence is the nuclear button of parliamentary democracy and cannot be abused - 1

The vote of no confidence is the nuclear button of parliamentary democracy and this procedure cannot be abused. This was stated on BNT by PP-DB MP and former Justice Minister Atanas Slavov.

"It is important that the topic of the future vote, which we will submit in September, is convincing enough, with enough arguments to make it clear that the second political force really approaches the votes of no confidence seriously, and not just smokes like the pro-Russian factions in parliament."

"Democratic Bulgaria" has set requirements for its colleagues in "We continue the change" to improve the way they select candidates for high public positions. Atanas Slavov, however, is adamant that the PP-DB coalition remains united because it represents a significant part of Bulgarian society and should be an alternative to the government.

Regarding the arrest of Varna Mayor Blagomir Kotsev commented:

"When accusations seem to be sewn together with white thread, the impression of political repression is left. These recordings cannot be used in court and therefore are leaked into the public domain to create the impression that someone has broken the law, that they were in some corrupt collusion, that they have committed a crime. Let the charges be brought to court and verified by it."

The topic of judicial reform and justice must be put on the agenda of society and the government after the critical report on the rule of law, the MP also commented.

"There is a lack of progress on four topics, on the other two there has been limited progress for an entire year. The major topics of the independence of the court, the accountability of the prosecution, the depoliticization of the Supreme Judicial Council and the inspectorate remain. Since the end of my mandate in March last year, a completely new, ready-made law on the judiciary has been in place, which introduced all the basic provisions that the EC writes about and for which we receive recommendations. This bill has not been submitted for a year and three months, and even parts of it have not been submitted. Obviously, we have a stalling of the judicial reform - either it is not a priority for the current government, or this is the political situation at the moment".

The Ombudsman is bypassing himself as a member of the so-called nomination committee for the Anti-Corruption Commission, believes Atanas Slavov. According to him, the anti-corruption body will not work efficiently because the current majority will choose convenient people.

"The problem with the anti-corruption body is that it acts selectively - it hits the opposition and protects the ruling party."
