Assoc. Prof. Tatyana Burudzhieva: Gyurov's figure will further influence the activity - 1

Although there were quite a few who said "Yes", the choice was extremely difficult, because only one person among those who said "Yes" has political experience and knows what it is about to some extent, and that is Mr. Gyurov.

On the other hand, his reaction when leaving after his meeting with the president was also very indicative, he came out with the self-confidence of the future Prime Minister. In this sense, the consultations could have been much more compressed, so to speak, since the choice had clearly been made even then, because I would not want Mr. Gyurov to have lied to us even with his first appearance as at least an expected Prime Minister.

This is what political scientist Assoc. Prof. Tatyana Burudzhieva said in the program "Bulgaria, Europe and the World in Focus" on radio "Focus" regarding the choice of Andrey Gyurov as Prime Minister.

And she added: "You see that the choice of Mr. Gyurov, who I strongly hope will do a good job as acting Prime Minister and, most importantly, that passions calm down a little. One part of the political spectrum says: this is the only person who is very clearly, far and beyond the influence of those who were protested against in the squares, but at the same time, he is very close to the influence of others and, moreover, he has legal doubts. So I realize that it was very difficult for President Yotova to make a choice that would be final. The list in which the president's choice is limited makes this literally impossible, but in the current situation, the president is clearly betting on the presence of competence in the political process regardless of all possible obstructions and accusations. I strongly hope that the legal side of the case will not cast doubt on Mr. Gyurov's functioning as Prime Minister".

As for what the nomination of Andrey Gyurov as Prime Minister will bring, she says:

"A certain reassurance that the protest's desire to distance, so to speak, the governance process from the influence that they suspect in all areas of Mr. Peevski will definitely bring. That is, some reassurance or increased confidence in the upcoming elections. Because this is the main task of the future caretaker government. But at the same time, I repeat, suspicions are growing very strongly in another part of society that he will act in a party-bound manner and will in practice propose a Council of Ministers that will be a preliminary government of the PP-DB, before they have even run for elections and managed to seize power through elections".

And he added: "This choice, this name carries this. The other names carried other things that, in my opinion, in the election of the president there was no possibility of making a choice with minimum damage. When I say minimum damage, i.e. the negativity towards the figure of the Prime Minister to be confined to smaller social groups. At the moment, the negativity and the categorical rejection or acceptance of this caretaker government as an opportunity to start change, on the other hand, as an opportunity to manipulate the election result, will exist. That is, this nomination only deepens existing battles that are pre-election battles. And this is the big negativity around this name. That's why I thought that it would be more likely to go to one of Mr. Glavchev's deputies, who seemed to me to be a fairly neutral figure and I would say enough - an administrative figure. Now with Mr. Gyurov, one group will claim that the caretaker government will consist of professionals and experts, and the other group will claim that this is their weapon to win some elections by proxy".

According to her, this will further affect the activity.

"Personally, I think that in this situation, the figure of the Prime Minister is more likely to increase activity than to decrease activity. Because the battle is starting to look, and on both sides, it is starting to look very unfair, it is going beyond the political, official, legitimate terrain on which election campaigns should be conducted. Of course, Mr. Gyurov has the opportunity to present a strong team. When I say a strong team, a truly expertly strong team, which will reduce the sharpness or strength in general of the arguments of his critics. And I strongly hope that we will have such a caretaker government that will deal as much as possible with guarantees for the fairness of the elections".
