Another disturbing attack against a Bulgarian citizen in North Macedonia. I am seriously concerned about what happened to the mayor of Skopje, Ms. Daniela Arsovska – a Bulgarian citizen. I call on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bulgarian Embassy in Skopje to immediately provide her with legal, consular and moral protection, wrote the Bulgarian MEP in the European Parliament Andrey Kovachev on his Facebook profile.
This is another case of violence, harassment and public lynching against Bulgarian citizens who hold high public positions and have acquired Bulgarian citizenship on the basis of proven Bulgarian origin – only because they dared to declare themselves as Bulgarians, he added.
Unfortunately, the pressure is so strong that our compatriots are forced to hide or deny their Bulgarian identity. A similar case was recently with the Minister of Energy Sanya Bozhinovska, with several MPs from the ruling DPMNE, as well as with people from the closest family circle of the current, previous and the previous prime ministers of the country, Kovachev also wrote.
"The Bulgarian state has a duty to its over 216,000 Bulgarian citizens in the Republic of North Macedonia, who became such of their own free will, proved their Bulgarian origin with documents and declared on their own that they now feel like ethnic Bulgarians. Bulgaria is obliged to protect their rights, security and human dignity," the MEP appealed.
