Swedish furniture company IKEA intends to open a platform for trading used goods. "It will be called IKEA Preowned", announced Jesper Brodin, CEO of the INGKA group, which owns IKEA stores.
„We have long dreamed of creating a platform for selling second-hand goods”, Brodin told the British newspaper Financial Times. According to him, by the end of the year the platform will work in test mode in Madrid and Oslo, and in the future the company will expand its coverage to a global level.
IKEA has previously sold used furniture purchased by its customers, but the new platform involves direct interaction between buyers and sellers. IKEA Preowned customers will independently upload photos of their products and bid, after which the platform's database will use artificial intelligence to select appropriate advertising images and furniture sizes. The site is positioned as a competitor to the American online store eBay.
