We are celebrating 147 years since the birth of one of the notable Bulgarian authors. Elin Pelin was born on July 8, and according to other sources – on July 18, 1877 in the village of Bailovo, Novoselsko, then in the Ottoman Empire. The town of Elin Pelin, which is located very close to his native village of Bailovo, was named after him. He died in 1949 in Sofia.

His birth name is Dimitar Ivanov Stoyanov, but he became known under the pseudonym Elin Pelin.

It is interesting where this nickname comes from. At that time, Bulgarian writers had the habit of signing themselves with different pseudonyms. Dimitar was looking for a suitable name ending in "in". By chance he comes across the folk song "Elin wormwood, green wormwood"; and by sonority he chooses this particular word combination as his nickname.

Besides Elin Pelin, Dimitar Stoyanov used several other pseudonyms. Among them are – Blagolaj, Kamen Shipkov, Elcho, Pan, Pelinash, Cher Chemer.

The central place in his work is occupied by the description of the Bulgarian village, this is also the reason why he is called the "singer of the Bulgarian village”. Some of his most popular works are "The Scourge of God", "The Windmill", "On the Other World", and "Andreshko".
